I bought this plant at the Dutchy of Cornwall nursery without knowing anything about it. As it was late in the year it looked in a sorry state. It is a woody perennial that likes moist areas. As the leaves contain a volatile oil, which acts on the kidneys, it is said to have been used as a detoxifying herb for fevers, colds, flu and other viral conditions. It also stimulates the removal of waste products via the kidneys. It is also known as St. John's Herb. A tea made with the dried leaves is said to cut short the chill of intermittent fever.
