This plant forms a mound of about 1 feet(30cm) in a pot in the pond. It will colonise a field and when in full flower the field looks like it is covered in snow or cotton. I think it needs a spell of dryness to initiate flowering, because when I keep it wet alll year round it does not flower. Found in abundance on acid peat on raised and blanket bogs. The plant is fairly inconspicuous in flower, but in fruit it produced plumes of white cotton-like hairs which give the plant its common name. For a grass it is spectacular and is native to Ireland.
