This plant is absolutely beautiful for two weeks in the spring when large numbers of purple legume type flowers hang pendantly down from its bare stems. The vine then start to twine wherever it wants to. It gets behind guttering and pipework and as the stems swell it rips the guttering off the side of the house or even bends pipework. It can completely cover a small house. After planting it usually takes up to four years to flower. Grafted types can control its size and vigour. Pruning is necessary for control.
