To get this wall of Forsythia flowers pruning at the right time is necessary as Forsythia only flowers on the previous years growth. If left to its own devices it would overwhelm my small garden so usually twice a year I have to prune it back treating it like a hedge. The last prune must allow it to produce enough growth to produce flowers the following spring.
